Chennai Super Kings defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore by 23-runs to claim their first win of the season. Chasing a big target of 217, RCB fought well till the end and managed to score 193/9 in 20 overs. Maheesh Theekshana was the pick of the bowlers for CSK with figures of 4/33. CSK skipper Ravindra Jadeja also bowled well to scalp three wickets.
After opting to bowl first, RCB started well and reduced CSK to 36/2 in 7 overs. Josh Hazlewood trapped Ruturaj Gaikwad LBW for 17. Moeen Ali (3) went back cheaply after a mix-up in the middle. Robin Uthappa alongside Shivam Dube played slow and steady to anchor the CSK innings.
Suddenly, both batters shifted their gears to play brilliant shots. Both delivered terrific batting and rained sixes to add 165-runs for the third wicket. Uthappa played some elegant shots before Wanindu Hasaranga dismissed him for 88-runs. Dube remained unbeaten on 95-runs and guided CSK to post 216/4.
Chasing a mammoth total, RCB lost its skipper Faf du Plessis (8) and star batter Virat Kohli (1) early and cheaply. Glenn Maxwell, who looked to counter-attack, was cleaned up by Jadeja on 26. Shahbaz Ahmed and Suyash Prabhudessai showed some positive signs by adding 60-runs.
But CSK bowlers picked up wickets at crucial moments. Dinesh Karthik played a little cameo of 34-runs. All three batters showed glimpses of brilliance with the bat for RCB, but it was not enough to cross the finish line. In the end, CSK registered a comprehensive win.
