Team India is expected to see a new era of transition following their humiliating defeat at the 2023 World Test Championship final. India’s next series against the West Indies could see plenty of new players get a call-up for the national side in both Tests and T20Is. India touring West Indies next month will begin their campaign with two Test matches starting on July 12, followed by three ODIs and five T20Is.
Hardik Pandya is expected to lead the Indian side and several players who performed big in IPL 2023 are likely to be rewarded. The Test series against the Windies will be an important one as it will kickstart India’s campaign in the 2023-25 WTC cycle. Senior players Cheteshwar Pujara and Umesh Yadav’s places could come under the scanner as they are not performing up to the mark for a long time.
Yashasvi Jaiswal and Mukesh Kumar are in contention to replace the duo as the selection committee starts preparing the next batch of players for tougher assignments. Both players who were part of the WTC squad reserves could make their Test debut on the Caribbean Island.
You need to strike a balance. Selection is a process of elimination but you need that blend of youth and experience. I believe Jaiswal is ready for international cricket. He has scored double hundreds in Ranji, Irani, and Duleep Trophy. Looks solid in terms of temperament and could be groomed while being given enough chances to grow. I presume only form bowler is Mukesh but he is a seamer and not an express pacer, former national selector Devang Gandhi told PTI.
