Gujarat Titans (GT) produced a clinical performance to beat Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 34 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium. With a comfortable win, GT became the first team to qualify for playoffs, knocking out SRH. Chasing a challenging 189, SRH top-order batters failed to make an impact at the start. Though Heinrich Klaasen fought a lone battle with a fine knock of 64, Mohammed Shami and Mohit Sharma were in fiery form for GT and scalped four wickets each to restrict SRH to 154/9.
Earlier, Bhuvneshwar Kumar gave a good start for SRH by dismissing Wriddhiman Saha for a duck. But Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan changed the momentum of the game by attacking the SRH bowlers. Especially Gill played some delightful shots to score quick runs. Both stitched an outstanding partnership of 147 for the second wicket. Sudharsan departed after playing a key knock of 47.
Meanwhile, Gill continued with his red-hot form to bring up his maiden IPL century, packed with 13 fours and one six. SRH bowlers bowled well towards the end and picked up regular wickets. Gill’s blistering 101 helped GT to reach 188/9 in 20 overs. For SRH, Bhuvneshwar starred with a five-wicket haul.
SRH’s chase never get going as Shami ran through its top order, picking up three wickets in no time. Mohit then struck twice in his first over, dismissing Sanvir Singh (7) and Abdul Samad (4) as SRH reeled 49/6 in 7 overs. Klaasen played a counter-attacking game but lacked good support from other batters. Bhuvneshwar and Mayank Markande chipped in with a handy 27 and 18 respectively but those were not enough to take SRH home.
