Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj ran riot with the ball sharing seven wickets between them to put their side in the driver’s seat in the opening Test. Spinner Yadav scalped four while seamer Siraj bagged three to reduce Bangladesh to 133/8 in reply to India’s 404. Mehidy Hasan (16*) and Ebadot Hossain (13*) put up a 31-run partnership to give the hosts a faint hope of avoiding a follow-on when they resume play on Day 3.

India started Day 2 with the thought of posting a big total from the overnight score of 278/6. But Hossain had another plan and bowled out Shreyas Iyer for 86 early in the opening session. Bangladesh then hoped to quickly polish off the Indian tail. However, Ravichandran Ashwin and Yadav dashed the hosts’ hopes by stitching a 92-run stand for the 8th wicket.

This partnership drove India near the 400-run mark. Ashwin fell for 58 and very soon Taijul Islam trapped Yadav LBW on 40. Umesh Yadav chipped in with 15 runs. Islam and Hasan bagged four wickets each for their side.

Siraj gave India a stunning start by dismissing Najmul Shanto in the very first delivery. Umesh removed Yasir Ali (4) to make it 2/5 and then Siraj cleaned up Litton Das (24) to collapse the top-order. Yadav dismissed rival captain Shakib Al Hasan (3) and then sent back Nurul Hasan (16) when Shubman Gill took a sharp catch at short leg. The left-arm spinner reduced Bangladesh to 102/8 by picking up two wickets in the same over. India led by 271 runs at stumps.
