Manchester City’s manager Pep Guardiola has admitted that he is unsure about the future of his team’s goalkeeper Ederson, who was linked with a move away from the current Premier League champions during the summer transfer window. Ederson has spent the previous seven seasons at the Etihad Stadium, having joined from Benfica in 2017, making 332 appearances in all competitions and winning six domestic titles and the 2022/23 Champions League.
The 30-year-old Brazilian custodian is attracting heavy interest from the Saudi Pro League, with both Al Ittihad and Al Ahli interested in a possible trade. Several reports stated that Manchester City will not stand in Ederson’s way if he desires to leave and a suitable deal is agreed by all parties.
Following City’s 4-3 preseason defeat to Celtic, Guardiola stated that Ederson’s future is uncertain and expressed his desire for the three-time Premier League Golden Glove winner to stay. I don’t know; he needs to consider other choices. Of course, I want him to stay. Depends now on the clubs. I’m not sure what’s going on; I haven’t heard anything in the last few days. It’s a question of training and staying with us until the transfer window closes, and then we’ll see what happens, the former Spain player asserted.
He’s been the keeper for the team that had incredible success in the last seven or eight years. We have an incredible three keepers, especially the two who play regularly. A really important position in the team. Really good team of keepers. We will see until the last day of the transfer window when anything can happen. Not just Ederson but many players, Guardiola added.
German goalkeeper Stefan Ortega is undoubtedly the finest backup for Ederson in the English Premier League, but City will face a lot of questions and scrutiny regarding the keeper position until the Premier League season kicks off. Scott Carson is the other senior goalkeeper on the roster, and he has only made one Premier League appearance in 13 years. If Ederson leaves, who will replace him, and will he have the same influence as the Brazilian? It will be a talking point during the entire season.
Meanwhile, City’s midfield maestro Kevin De Bruyne recently intimated that he would contemplate a move to the Middle East at some point in his career, and only has a year left on his present contract. When asked about the Belgium international’s future, Guardiola responded sharply and definitively, saying that he will not leave this summer.
