Centurion Laura Wolvaardt forced India to wait a little longer for the winning moment, but they eventually crossed the line convincingly by 10 wickets on the fourth day of the one-off Test against South Africa in Chennai. India had to chase a modest 37 after bowling South Africa out for 373 in their second innings, and they completed the task in 9.2 overs without losing a wicket. India declared their first innings at 603 for six. Shubha Satheesh (13*) and Shafali Verma (24*) led their team to a comfortable win.
After being swept out for 266 in the first innings, the Proteas rallied back with century-hitters Wolvaardt (122) and Sune Luus (109) in the second. Nonetheless, South Africa could only postpone the inevitable. Wolvaardt and Marizanne Kapp appeared to be in terrific form after resuming at 232 for two overnight and trailing India by 105 runs. The former achieved her first Test century while becoming the first woman batter to score a Test, ODI, and T20I century in the same year.
However, Kapp was quickly trapped leg-before by Deepti Sharma for 31, and Sneh Rana defeated Delmi Tucker for a duck as the tourists fell to 266 for four. With work to be done before the South Africans could take the lead, Wolvaardt attempted to anchor the innings but was removed when Rajeshwari Gayakwad trapped her in front, reducing the visitors to 281 for five.
However, the Proteas pressed on and passed the 300-run mark, their greatest team total in Tests against the Indians. The previous highest was the 266 they scored in their first innings here. Indian bowlers then produced a fine effort to take wickets regularly and bowl out the visiting side. Sneh Rana, who took 10 wickets in the match, was honored with the Player of the Match award.
