BCCI announces India’s squad for T20Is and ODIs of Sri Lanka tour

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the passing of the captaincy torch at the Indian camp on Thursday, with star batter Suryakumar Yadav succeeding Rohit Sharma as the new T20I captain. Rohit Sharma, fresh from leading India to victory in the T20 World Cup, will return to ODIs for the series against Sri Lanka. At the same time, Virat Kohli will also return to the fifty-over format.

Earlier, Suryakumar captained the T20I team in an away series against South Africa, when Rohit Sharma was unavailable for selection due to a demanding ODI World Cup. Jasprit Bumrah, the team’s main fast bowler, has been rested for the tour. Shubman Gill was selected as India’s vice-captain for both the T20I and ODI series. Sanju Samson has also been named to the white-ball team for the Sri Lanka tour.

The Sri Lanka T20I series will feature opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, all-rounder Shivam Dube, Rinku Singh, and Riyan Parag. However, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Abhishek Sharma, who had great outings against Zimbabwe, were not included in the T20I squad. Bowlers Mohammed Siraj and Axar Patel returned to T20Is, while Ravi Bishnoi, Washington Sundar, and Khaleel Ahmed all retained their positions from the Zimbabwe tour.

KL Rahul retains his spot in the squad, while Rishabh Pant returns to the fifty-over format. Shreyas Iyer, who was removed from the BCCI’s annual contract list earlier this year, has been rewarded for his efforts in the Ranji Trophy and a successful IPL season. Parag was also given his first call-up to the fifty-over side, while Arshdeep Singh, Khaleel, and Harshit Rana joined the pace attack.
