Despite a maiden ton by Bangladesh opener Liton Das, in Dubai, India retained Asia Cup with a three wicket win from the last ball over.
In front of a capacity crowd of 25,000 in Duabi, Bangladesh fought tooth and nail for each ball before India the Asia Cup holders made it a memorable win against Bangladesh’s modest total of 223 runs.
Das who held the innings together with his 117 – ball 121 runs that featured a dozen boundaries which also included two sixes, Bangladesh still got bowled out in 48.3 overs this notwithstanding the 120 opening stand with Mehidy Hasan.
With Rohit Sharma scoring 48 along with Shikar Dhawan (15) set the foundation. After whom Dinesh Jarthik (37) and M S Dhone (36) quickly added 54 for the fourth wicket.
Ravindera Jadeja scored 23 while Bhuvenshwar Kumar (21) bringing the target in India’s reach with their 45 – run stand for the sixth wicket but they were both removed when eight runs were still needed.
With India requiring six off the last over and just one run off the final ball, that run was delivered to India by a leg bye.
For the second time Bangladesh has lost the Asia Cup, the last being in 2012 when they were short of just two runs against the final with Pakistan.
Hasan opened the innings for Bangladesh while India’s pace-cum spin attack was handled effectively by Das.
Bangladesh were not helped either by three-outs with left-arm spinner Khuldeep Yadav ended with a tally of 3-45.
India are Asia Cups best hope for the upcoming World Cup that will take place in England next year due to a fast improving bowling lineup backed up by a powerful batting lineup.
