Major alert as top-tier golf arrives in India with the DeChambeau Express

LIV Golf is looking towards India. Although an official announcement is anticipated later this week, it appears that the league’s 2025 season, starting with LIV Golf Riyadh on February 6 will kick off with an International Series India event at DLF Golf and Country Club in Gurgaon from January 30 to February 2.

This potential event has been a hot topic at the Hero Women’s Indian Open that concluded on Sunday, with discussions among DLF members, grounds staff, and greens personnel, often conveyed through discreet hints, but there’s already a surge of excitement surrounding the International Series tournament.

Adding to the buzz is the revelation by Dubai-based golf writer Joy Chakravarty in Tuesday’s Hindustan Times that US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau will compete in India for the first time in his professional career.

If this happens, it will be a historic moment as a current major champion will be seen playing in India for the first time. Anirban Lahiri, a member of DeChambeau’s Crushers GC team in the LIV Golf League, has been working to organize the event and was quoted in the article saying, “I think we are almost there. There are just a few minor details on which we have to dot the I’s and cross the T’s.”

But yes, I think it will be massive for Indian golf fans if Bryson is there. Single-handedly, with what he does on the golf course and outside it through his social media channels and his interaction with fans, he has brought millions of new fans to our sport. I think we can all agree he is the most popular golfer in the world right now.

DeChambeau also told Chakravarty at the LIV Golf Team Championship in Dallas last month, that I am aware that Baan (Lahiri) is going to be involved and we have had a few talks about it. It will be a very important week for him. I will support him fully, and if everything works out, I am extremely excited about the opportunity to play in India. I have never been there, but it’s a country that has fascinated me. I have always loved being a global player and I greatly enjoy playing in as many countries as possible.

The Crushers were among four teams that declared an unchanged roster for the 2025 season, and Lahiri has been a member of the team since he joined LIV Golf in 2022. According to the HT report, all four players – DeChambeau, Lahiri, Paul Casey, and Charles Howell III – are anticipated to participate in the event in India, which will be sponsored by the DLF group.

The International Series is a 10-tournament-enhanced addition to the Asian Tour’s lineup, featuring a prize fund ranging from one to two million dollars. If this information is confirmed, it will mark the very first event on the 2025 Asian Tour calendar.

In the meantime, LIV Golf has also revealed information about its second Promotions event, set to take place at Riyadh Golf Club from December 12 to 14, offering one position in the league for 2025 along with an additional 10 spots for the International Series.

Jon Rahm claimed the individual title of LIV Golf’s 2024 season in Chicago, while Cameron Smith’s all-Australian team, Rippers GC, secured the championship at the season finale in Dallas. With the recent relegations, new opportunities will arise for elite players worldwide to qualify for the league and International Series in 2025, according to a LIV Golf announcement.

The Promotions tournament, offering a $1.5 million prize, will take place in Riyadh over four stroke-play rounds within three days, including 36 holes on the last day. The player finishing at the top will earn a position in the LIV Golf League for the next season, and the top 10 finishers, including ties, will receive full exemption into all events scheduled for the 2025 International Series.
