Rohit Sharma’s captaincy of India is an unusual circumstance. Indian cricket has a tradition of grooming young players for the role. In reality, three of the most successful captains, Sourav Ganguly, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli, were named at the ages of 27, 26, and 27.

However, when Rohit was appointed as Indian captain, he was nearly 34 years old. He was the most successful IPL captain with the Mumbai Indians, winning five titles, but full-time captaincy with India had eluded him.

Although Men in Blue are favorites to win the World Cup title, Rohit doesn’t guarantee a thing. Yes, we have not won, it’s fine. You are talking about the Indian captaincy and there have been stalwarts in the Indian team. Many more players deserved to be the captain of the team. I had to wait for my turn and that’s absolutely fair enough. Virat was before me, so was MS Dhoni, Rohit said.

Just look at the names that are missed out Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag, they are stalwarts of Indian cricket. Yuvraj Singh never captained India. But Yuvraj has been such a match-winner for India, he should have been the captain at some stage but he didn’t get it. I got it now and I am grateful for it, Rohit concluded.
