Quinton de Kock’s historical knock of 174 helped South Africa to thrash Bangladesh

South Africa is emphasizing that their shocking defeat to the Netherlands in the World Cup match was just that, an upset. Three days after hammering defending champions England at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, the Proteas pulled off another emphatic win at the same venue, this time against a struggling Bangladesh team. Similarly, to their batting performance against England, the Proteas finished within touching distance of 400 runs despite a rough start to their innings. South Africa were clinical with the ball as usual, essentially killing off the contest before Bangladesh’s chase could even reach the halfway point in terms of overs, albeit they were guilty of taking their foot off the gas pedal later in the encounter.

As the Bangladeshi top-six disintegrated like a house of cards, the Proteas once again reduced the match to a no-contest with the ball. Tanzid Hasan and Litton Das added 30 before Marco Jansen caught both the former and Najmul Hossain Shanto in successive deliveries. Klaasen would make his third consecutive catch, with World Cup debutant Lizaad Williams dismissing Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan for only one run.

After steering a short, wide delivery straight to third man, Mushfiqur Rahim became the first of Gerald Coetzee’s three wickets. And, by the time Das left, Bangladesh was 58/5 and facing a record defeat after being blasted out for approximately 100 runs. Bangladesh eventually reached 200 through a succession of partnerships, and their ability to delay South Africa in the second half of their chase was largely down to Mahmudullah’s gutsy run-a-ball 111.

Quinton de Kock made history by recording the second-highest score by a South African batter in the World Cup match. De Kock created history during the match against Bangladesh at Mumbai’s renowned Wankhede Stadium. The left-handed opener scored his 20th ODI century, managing South Africa’s innings and overcoming early difficulties with the help of Aiden Markram. This was his third century in the Cricket World Cup 2023, making him the first South African hitter to score three hundred in a single World Cup.

He became the seventh batter in World Cup history to hit at least three hundred in a single tournament. After reaching his century, the opener changed gears and slaughtered the Bangladeshi bowlers. He struck Shakib Al Hasan for 22 in one over to reach 150 and then surpassed AB de Villiers’ 162 against West Indies, which was the second-highest score by a South African in the World Cup. Gary Kirsten leads the list with a score of 188 against UAE in the 1996 World Cup.
