Mohammed Siraj’s six-wicket haul helped India to be on top on Day 1

A staggering opening day of the second Test in Cape Town as pacers from both teams dominated the game completely. It was a stunning day of Test cricket as a total of 23 wickets fell in just 80 overs. South Africa ended Day 1 with a score of 62/3 in their second innings, trailing India by 36 runs. Mukesh Kumar scalped two wickets while Jasprit Bumrah bagged one. Earlier, the Proteas were bundled out for 55 runs in their first innings, thanks to Mohammed Siraj’s six-wicket haul.

Dean Elgar elected to bat first and the Indian pacers proved that decision was wrong, as they wonderfully utilized the conditions and gave the Proteas a taste of their own medicine. Aiden Markram was Siraj’s first victim and Elgar followed him quickly without making a big impact as Siraj cleaned him up for just 4. None of the Proteas batters were able to stick around for long as the Indian bowlers troubled them with exceptional bowling.

David Bedingham and Kyle Verreynne were the two batters who saw the two-digit scores of 12 and 15 respectively. Bumrah and Mukesh supported Siraj well by picking up two wickets each. Siraj registered his best Test career figures of 6/15 in 9 overs.

India started positively even after losing Yashasvi Jaiswal early for a duck. Rohit Sharma (39) and Shubman Gill (36) played steadily, adding 52 runs for the second wicket. But Nandre Burger bowled a brilliant spell, picking up three quick wickets to bring the hosts back into the game. Virat Kohli batted well for his 46 and it looked like India would take a good lead in the first innings. However, Lungi Ngidi bowled a triple-wicket maiden to completely change things around and India went from 153/4 to 153 all out.
