Chennai Super Kings (CSK) produced a dominating performance to thrash Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 49 runs on Sunday. With a comprehensive win, CSK moved to the top of the table with 10 points to their credit. Chasing a very big 236, Jason Roy played an electrifying knock of 26-balls 61 to keep KKR in the hunt but other batters failed to fire when it mattered the most.
Batting first, CSK got off to a perfect start as Ruturaj Gaikwad (35) and Devon Conway added 73 runs in 7 overs before Suyash Sharma cleaned up the former. Conway scored a brilliant 56, smashing his fourth consecutive half-century this season. Meanwhile, Ajinkya Rahane announced his arrival with aggressive batting.
Rahane played delightful shots and scored runs at an amazing strike rate of 244.83. On the other end, Shivam Dube (50) smashed KKR bowlers all over the park to hit the third-joint fastest fifty of this season. Both batted superbly to add 85 runs in just 31 balls. Ravindra Jadeja’s cameo of 18 and Rahane’s terrific knock of 29-balls 71* powered CSK to a mammoth total of 235/4, the highest at the Eden Gardens.
KKR’s chase got off to a poor start as its openers Sunil Narine (0) and Narayan Jagadeesan (1) walked back early. Moments later, Moeen Ali and Jadeja picked up the wickets of Venkatesh Iyer (20) and Nitish Rana (27) in quick succession. But Roy and Rinku Singh added 65 runs for the fifth wicket to keep the chase alive.
In the 15th over, Maheesh Theekshana bowled a brilliant yorker to clean up Roy who looked very dangerous. Rinku (53*) fought a lone battle till the end but his effort was not enough to take KKR home.
