Tiger Wood and Rory McIlroy’s TGL Golf League to be delayed until 2025

TGL, the Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy-led mixed-reality circuit that was supposed to start in five weeks has been delayed a year due to major damage to the league’s arena. The air-supported dome of TGL’s SoFi Centre in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla, collapsed last week due to a power outage, according to TGL officials. At this time, while we assess the damage, it is too early to determine the impact on our timelines, stated a TGL representative. No one was hurt, and no technology was harmed. Other work on the job site is ongoing, he added.

The league, however, is now set to be postponed until 2025. According to Sports Business Journal, simply delaying the league’s introduction by a few weeks or months was not an option since ESPN, which is planned to carry the league on its networks, would be unable to accommodate the shift in schedule for its broadcast windows.

Following discussions with key partners such as players, our six team ownership groups, PGA Tour leadership, and our commercial partners, SoFi, ESPN, and Palm Beach State College, the decision was made to delay the start of the TGL season until early 2025, a TGL spokesperson said on Monday. This decision was reached after careful consideration of short-term solutions, potential construction timelines, player schedules, and the primetime sports television calendar, he added.

Despite the new timeline for the arena, we are still optimistic about the future of TGL and will continue to generate excitement among our players, fans, and teams between now and the start of the season. We’ve started updating plans and deadlines, and we’re convinced that the extension will only improve our service, the spokesperson stated.

I’ve been a believer in TGL, and as the momentum has built this past year, I’m even more excited about what this can become for fans of the game all around the world, Tiger Woods said in a statement. Although the events of last week will force us to make adjustments to our timelines, I’m fully confident that this concept will be brought to life by our great committed players, the legendary golfer expressed.

The postponement brings mixed feelings of disappointment and excitement. Above all, we are happy that no one was injured. We are looking forward to the launch of TGL. Given the circumstances, while the delay is disappointing, the postponement will allow us to regroup, refocus, and return stronger, McIlroy said. Sources tell the league is targeting a similar January timeline for launch in 2025.
