Team India produced an excellent comeback with the ball to win the game from the jaws of defeat. With just 6 runs to defend, India’s skipper Suryakumar Yadav bowled a brilliant final over, scalping two wickets and conceding just 5 runs to take the game into the Super Over. Washington Sundar exhibited an absolute beauty in the Super Over, giving away just 2 runs and taking two wickets. In reply, Suryakumar smashed a four to win the thriller and complete a clean sweep (3-0).
Earlier, Indian batters gifted their wickets, trying to play an attacking cricket. Yashasvi Jaiswal departed on 10 after Maheesh Theekshana bowled a straight one to trap him LBW. In the next over, Chamindu Wickramasinghe removed Sanju Samson for a duck. Rinku Singh, who was promoted up in the order, failed to make an impact and walked back for just 1.
However, Shubman Gill and Riyan Parag stitched a crucial 54-run partnership to get India out of trouble. Wanindu Hasaranga outfoxed Gill, who played an anchoring innings of 37-ball 39. Parag played a handy knock of 26 before falling to Hasaranga. Sundar’s 25-run knock was so instrumental in taking India to a decent 137/9.
In reply, Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis gave the hosts a fine start, adding 58 runs in 9 overs. Ravi Bishnoi gave India a breakthrough by dismissing Nissanka for 26. Mendis (43) and Kusal Perera (46) completely took the game away from India with a 52-run partnership. Bishnoi yet again gave a much-needed breakthrough, dismissing Mendis. From thereon, Indian bowlers rolled on the Lankan batters and kept taking wickets to level the scores.
