Indian star batter Virat Kohli’s superb 95-run knock guided India to a four-wicket victory over New Zealand, extending their flawless World Cup record to five wins. Kohli came very close to equaling legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI hundreds but fell short by only five runs. During the innings, Kohli made history by being the first Indian player to score 3,000 runs in all ICC white-ball events, including the ODI World Cup, T20 World Cup, and Champions Trophy.
Kohli has 1,384 runs at an excellent average of 55.36 in 31 ODI World Cup appearances. He has three centuries and nine half-centuries to his name in the World Cup. Chris Gayle comes in second with 1,186 runs in ODI World Cups, 791 runs in the ICC Champions Trophy, and 965 runs in the ICC T20 World Cup.
Furthermore, Kohli has surpassed Sri Lanka’s attacking opener Sanath Jayasuriya (13,430 runs) to become the fourth-highest ODI run-scorer. Kohli has a tremendous ODI career, scoring 13,437 runs in 286 matches with a strike rate of 93.69. The right-handed batter’s ODI record includes 48 hundred and 69 half-centuries, with a best score of 183. Tendulkar continues to be the highest ODI run-scorer with 18,426 runs. He also holds the record for the most hundreds in the format with 49.
Kohli has also become the batsman with the joint-second-most 50+ hits in World Cup history (12). He surpassed former Australian captain Ricky Ponting and Rohit Sharma, both of whom had 11 fifty-plus scores, and tied Kumar Sangakkara and Shakib Al Hasan for the record. Tendulkar leads the way with a whopping 21 fifty-plus scores.
